After Otoplasty

After Otoplasty

Proper care is required following otoplasty to protect the ears and promote a smooth recovery. Patients may experience temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, or mild discomfort in the first few days. Following the surgeon’s postoperative instructions carefully can aid in healing and lower the risk of complications. Protecting the ears from pressure, rubbing, bending, and accidental injury is especially important during the initial recovery period. Patients should also follow instructions for dressings, headbands, sleeping positions, medications, and activity restrictions. With proper aftercare and regular follow-up appointments, patients can gradually return to their normal routine while allowing the ears to heal properly.

Otoplasty In Dubai

Otoplasty in Dubai involves reshaping or repositioning the ears, and proper aftercare is critical for promoting healing and protecting the surgical outcome. Following otoplasty, patients may experience temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, tightness, or mild discomfort around their ears. These effects usually improve gradually as recovery progresses. Patients should carefully follow their surgeon’s postoperative instructions and take any medications as prescribed. During the initial healing period, avoid applying unnecessary pressure, rubbing, pulling, or bending to the ears. A protective dressing or headband may be recommended to support the ears and keep them safe from accidental injury, especially while sleeping. Patients should avoid sleeping directly on their treated ears and may need to find a comfortable position that relieves pressure on the surgical area. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, contact sports, and activities that could result in an accidental impact on the ears should be avoided until medical clearance is obtained. Patients should also adhere to their surgeon’s instructions for showering, hair washing, and keeping the incision area clean and dry. Creams, makeup, and other products should not be used near the surgical site unless specifically recommended. Follow-up appointments are important because they allow the surgeon to monitor the healing process and identify any issues early. As the recovery process continues, swelling gradually subsides and the ears begin to settle into their new position. Patients should stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, get enough rest, and avoid smoking because these healthy habits can aid in overall recovery. It is important to remember that healing timelines vary between individuals, so patients should not compare their progress to that of others. Patients should contact their medical team as soon as they experience severe or worsening pain, excessive swelling, persistent bleeding, fever, unusual drainage, spreading redness, or any other unexpected symptoms. Patients can help maintain the desired otoplasty results by following personalized aftercare instructions, protecting the ears from pressure and injury, attending scheduled follow-ups, and gradually returning to normal activities.

The surgery can be associated with mild to moderate discomfort. This should be easy to manage with oral meds. Most kids just need regular Tylenol (acetaminophen).

Adults are generally always OK with Tylenolยฎ with codeine (or substitute if allergic to codeine).

Discomfort & pain should start to decrease within two days post-op. If you have a significant increase in pain after this time, please call the office.

How Do I Care For Myself After Surgery?

Have someone drive you to and from your surgery.

It is very important that someone stay with you at least the first night after your surgery.

Make sure to have your prescriptions filled before your surgery. Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of your surgery.

Your top should fasten with buttons or a zipper, not be pulled over your head.

Do not touch the dressing over the ears.

Take the antibiotics and pain medicine as directed by the clinic.

Do not take any aspirin or any anti-inflammatory compounds for 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after your surgery unless you have discussed this with your surgeon.

If you smoke, you should stop using all nicotine products, including nicotine patches. Tobacco restricts your circulation and can greatly impair your surgical outcome.

You will have your stitches removed approximately 2 weeks after surgery. Some sutures may be left to dissolve naturally.

You should wear a light supportive tennis headband over the ears at night for an additional 5 weeks after surgery to prevent inadvertent injury to the ears.

Sleep with the head elevated for the first two days.

Recovery Timetable

Bruising And Swelling After Otoplasty โ€” Whatโ€™s Normal

Swelling is most visible immediately after surgery, with a significant decrease typically occurring within three days to a week. The majority of swelling goes away within three to four weeks, but minor residual edema can take up to seven weeks to completely disappear. Numbness is also common and varies greatly between individuals; for some, it goes away within a month, while for others, it can last up to ten months, which is completely normal and not cause for concern.

Sleeping After Otoplasty

Your sleeping habits during the first few weeks following ear reshaping in Dubai have a significant impact on your recovery. For at least the first week, sleep entirely on your back; side sleeping puts pressure on the healing ears, causes pain, and increases swelling, which may harm your final shape. Elevate your head with three or four pillows to prevent you from rolling onto your side throughout the night; a reclining chair may be a better option if you prefer something more comfortable or secure than a bed.

Dos And Donโ€™ts After Otoplasty

Do

  • Keep your head elevated, especially during the first three weeks, to help reduce edema.
  • Wear your headband exactly as directed; it is not optional and protects your outcome.
  • Choose front-fastening clothing, such as button-down shirts or zip-ups, to avoid pulling anything over your head and disturbing the surgery site.
  • Eat a nutritious diet high in protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables to promote healing; soft meals or smoothies are ideal if chewing is uncomfortable at first.
  • Apply the recommended ointments gently to the incision sites, always washing your hands first.

Donโ€™t

  • Avoid touching or massaging your ears, as this can hinder healing and cause infection.
  • Use heat near your head (no hairdryers, straighteners, or similar equipment) while your ears are numb and bandaged because you will not feel heat damage.
  • Wash your hair with shampoo for the first week or so, as the chemicals may irritate healing wounds.
  • Smoking significantly reduces blood flow and oxygen supply to healing tissues.
  • Begin strenuous activity before the specified time, even if you feel ready sooner.

Patients should keep the surgical area clean and dry as directed by their surgeon, and avoid touching, rubbing, or applying unnecessary pressure to the ears. Prescribed medications should be taken exactly as directed. Patients may be advised to wear a protective headband or dressing to support their ears during the healing process, especially while sleeping. Patients should contact their doctor right away if they have severe or worsening pain, significant swelling, persistent bleeding, fever, unusual drainage, increased redness, or any other concerning symptoms.
