Breast reduction recovery is a gradual process. Most patients are able to resume light daily activities within one to two weeks. Some swelling, bruising and discomfort are anticipated and will gradually resolve with healing. Following your surgeon’s postoperative instructions, wearing a supportive surgical bra, and avoiding strenuous activities are important to help promote a smooth recovery and the best long-term results.
Breast Reduction In Dubai
Breast Reduction in Dubai is a very effective surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat and skin to help create smaller, lighter and more proportionate breasts. Recovery is gradual. Most patients experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort during the first few days after surgery. With adequate care, these symptoms slowly subside, and many women are able to return to light daily activities within one to two weeks. A supportive surgical bra, no heavy lifting and following your surgeonโs postoperative instructions are all key to a smooth recovery. As the patients heal, they start to feel more comfortable, their posture improves, and they gain confidence.

Instructions for Recovering from Breast Reduction
Night Of Breast Reduction Surgery
- Movement Matters. Make sure to get out of bed the minute youโre out of surgery and get moving. If youโre lying in bed or on the couch, be sure to move your legs and ankles. Breathe deeply often to keep your lungs clear.
- Sleep. Sleep on your back with your head elevated at an angle of about 40-50 degrees (3-4 pillows). Donโt sleep on one side. Raise your body to lessen swelling. One week. Carry on.
Medications After Breast Reduction
- Suffering. You will be given a prescription for a pain medication for post-operative pain control. Tylenol is available if your post-operative pain is not severe and you would prefer to take it instead of the medication prescribed. Do not take Tylenol with the pain medication, usually the medication you are prescribed will have Tylenol in it. Do not take more than 5,000 mg of Tylenol per 1 day period. Eat something before taking the medicine to reduce the chance of feeling sick.
- Sickness. If you are feeling nauseous (a common side effect of some stronger pain medications and after general anesthesia), we recommend that you take your nausea medication. They may have given you a patch of scopolamine to put behind your ear. This provides anti-nausea medication for three days post placement.
- Constipation. Constipation can occur when taking narcotic pain relievers. Recommended is Miralax or other over the counter laxatives. Donโt wait until youโre constipated. Start with narcotics for treatment.
- Avoid certain medicines. Use only medications approved or prescribed by your surgeon. Don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, etc.) for 2.5 weeks before and after surgery. These drugs can make you bleed more.
- Things to Avoid. Don’T drink alcohol, smoke or have caffeine as these will greatly slow the healing process.
Nutrition After Breast Reduction
- Diet. The best diet after surgery is a light low-fat diet. You may resume a regular diet after surgery as long as you do not have nausea or vomiting.
- Hydration. Drink 7-9 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. Donโt drink alcohol for 2.5 weeks and while you are still on pain medication.
Activity After Breast Reduction
- Work out. Normal daily activity can be resumed several days after surgery. Exercise can be resumed after 2-2.5 weeks of surgery. Begin lightly and gradually increase your exercise to your previous levels. Just so you know, swelling may get a little worse with exercise temporarily.
- Arm Movements. There are limits to your pain. No restrictions but if it hurts please don’t do it. You can wash and/or dry your hair.
- Compression Bra. You can expect to wear a compression bra the entire first week and then as desired or recommended by our plastic surgeons thereafter. The garment should fit tightly, but not so tightly as to cause breathing problems or create wounds or blisters from the compression. Wear your garment at all times except for showering and washing. This will help to reduce swelling and assist with healing.
- Driving. Do not drive or make important decisions until you have been off your pain medication for 1 day. Use good judgment.
- Make work fit. Most patients require approximately 6-7 days away from work depending on their occupational responsibilities. Going back to work part-time or on a light schedule starting with a can also help.
- Sexual Relations. You can resume sexual activity when the incisions are healed enough and you feel ready. There are no limitations.
Bathing After Breast Reduction
- Taking a shower. The day after your surgery, you may shower with assistance. Take your clothes off. The incisions are covered with a waterproof dressing and do not require any care. Change clothes after your shower.
- Hot Tubs/Baths/Pools. No tub baths or Jacuzzi (until your incisions have healed and approved by your surgeon) usually about 2.5 weeks. Wait a month for hot tubs (they tend to have more bacteria than regular chlorinated swimming pools).
How To Take Care Of Your Incisions After Breast Reduction
- Reductions. You will have a waterproof dressing over your incisions. No dressing changes or incision care needed. After your first post-op visit, the dressing will be taken off and a special tape will be used to help the scar heal. It also includes extra tape so you can continue with your planned scar regimen.
- Stitches. All stitches will dissolve.
- Sun Exposure. Limit or avoid sun exposure. Use SPF 40 or higher when outside. Sunburn, in particular, can exacerbate swelling and irritate a healing incision.
- Scar gel. Scarring is minimal and small and can take up to a year to fully heal. Once your incisions are fully healed and your doctor says it is okay you can begin to use silicone based gel on your scars to help improve healing.
What To Expect After Breast Reduction
- Drainage. There may be drainage from the incision sites for the first 3 days. Blood-tinged drainage. Post-op dressings may be reinforced with gauze or a light pad as needed.
- Bruises. You can expect bruising. Most bruises will disappear in about 2-2. weeks. The bruise will progress from a purple color to a yellow/green color as it starts to resolve.
- Edema. You should expect to have swelling for weeks and sometimes months. Resting it intermittently and wearing compression garments can help the swelling. Exercise and physical activity may temporarily exacerbate swelling but are encouraged.
- Itch. It is normal for the incision sites to itch some for a few days. Iโll take Benadryl for that.
- Pain. It is normal to experience tightness, pressure, soreness, itchiness and fatigue for several days to weeks as your body heals.
- Skin sensation changes. You may have less or more sensation in your nipples, incision sites and breast tissue. It is normal. Normal sensation should return within a few weeks to months.
- Final outcome. It can take 4-6 months to see the final results.

Downtime For Desk Jobs After Breast Reduction
Most patients with office or desk jobs are able to return to work in a week or two after breast reduction surgery, depending on what you do for your job and how comfortable you are. Jobs that involve heavy lifting, repetitive arm motions, or strenuous physical activity may take longer to recover from. Patients must avoid lifting heavy things and take regular breaks to stretch and move around even when back at work. If you listen to your body and follow your surgeonโs recommendations, you can safely return to your normal routine without compromising the healing process.
